Infested with flying ants?
Question:The last few days when the evenings have been mild here in the UK, I have had an infestation of flying ants, but in the upstairs bathroom, not outside.
I did not realise they lay nests in the house as well as outside. What is the best way to get rid of them? Its impossible to see where they are coming from.
Answers:
Get some Antstop - available from garden centres, it looks like a tin of shoe polish but has some chemical in it that attracts them and they return to the nest with it and it kills the lot. Works for me!
call environmental health and they have exterminators who can deal with them very quickly and discretly its not very expensive at all and more reliable than those sprays you can buy
We have this problem near our central heating boiler which has a pilot light so we can't use powders or sprays nor boiling water indoors. I do use the ant bait traps but the effects are limited.
Having had the problem for several years I can tell you that the large queen ants fly first, followed a short time later by the male ants all the time assisted by hoards of workers. They seem to do this twice in the season with a fortnight's gap and it only happens on two days.
My best solution is to stand by and either squash them with a shoe or suck them up the Dyson and once they're gone, that's it for another year!
We had the same just inside our front door with an external porch door. Best way is to ensure that when they emerge from the nest that they can fly away unhindered, so leave the window open for them. When they have gone and none are coming from the nest pour in a little petrol or paraffin. Just a half teaspoon will do. Or buy Nippon an ant killer and use as directed.
Get Rentokil in quick (your local council may have a scheme which is cheaper) I had this prob a few years ago and it was impossible to get rid with any of the proprietary pesticides. Theyll find ur kitchen in days.
You had better check some pictures on the web to be sure it is flying ants you have and not termites.
If they are termites, don*t wait call an exterminator NOW before they eat your house from the inside .
I've never heard of flying ants. Are you sure these pests are not termites?
A termite looks like an ant with wings.
I had this problem and I just sprayed them with RAID and it worked fine.We do'nt get termites in the uk I do'nt think.
It is too early for flying ants.
Late August early September they grow wings climb to a high spot, like a 6ft garden fence, take off into the wind looking for a mate. They mate on the wing (the ant mile high club) then fall to the earth, their wings drop off and they go off to start another ant colony else where.
So it looks like you flying bugs are something else.
Wipe all surfaces with vinegar, don't worry the smell soon dissipates. Do this regularly and they'll soon leave. It's this awful weather it's sending em indoors.
