Another con, in our area you cannot dispose of them in the regular trash container. Our waste disposal will fine you. To properly dispose of it, you must take it to the "household round-up of hazardous materials" held every 6 weeks and remember to keep the cupon which enables you to dispose of a certain amount of "hazardous" items without charge. I suspect a lot of people will not make this effort, risk the fine by hiding it in the regular trash and they will wind up in the landfill.
Pros
Use 1/3 (23w vs 60 w) of the energy of regular incandescant bulbs with the same light output
Lasts 6 times longer than a regular incandescant bulb
Available in warm and cool white
Available in all types of applications
Cons
Initial cost (but it will pay for itself in lack of regular replacement and energy cost)
People will say if one breaks there is an expensive cleanup but 1 bulb does not contain enough hazzardous materials to warrant that, you would be told to just sweep it up and throw it out.
Cold weather will affect the light output on any flourescent light
Cannot be used on a dimmer switch
another con to fluorescent light is that it's UGLY.
and yes the lamps do need disposed of properly as they contain mercury. Also they require a ballast (which the fixture will have when you purchase it but it is another component which does go bad and will need replaced with time)
