How can you tell what kind of metal something is?
Question:I was just using my metal detector and I dug up a very large, very heavy chunk of metal out of my backyard. (In rural Ohio) It looks like it was once a flat sheet, but has been folded into about 3-4 layers. I has sort of a blue color with a little gray mixed in. It is not magnetic. Anyone know what it could be?
Answers:
If it is not magnetic its not A form of steel, could be lead, lead goes a blue/Gray colour with age. Probably some flashing from someones roof, [ that's the seal between chimney stack and the shingle ]
It could be just plain steel that has been heat treated. Because I know steel turns blue when it is heated up to a certain temperature then allowed to cool.
Maybe it's lead.
It could be lead,on the other hand it could be plutonium 236...
You might like to try scrap metal dealers, my local non-ferrous dealer in Columbus Ohio has a machine for analysing and recognising metals.
Is it soft? If so, probably lead
