Growing up with wood burning stoves, one of you is close. You can get a 2 burner wood stove and use it to cook on, other than that it's just a heater. You can get a larger 4 burner stove that has an oven and a warmer across the top. If not used for cooking and baking, it's just another heater. So the one that said it's an over wins.
A cook stove has the oven. A wood burning stove is not an oven but a heat source but may have the capacity for a burning type rangetop heat source for cooking or heating food or water. I have both a cook stove and a wood stove.
its a heater, not a fireplace or an oven
wood burning cook stove has a firebox where the fire is built and the fuel added. The oven is a separate metal box inside the cook stove that is heated by the fire. The cook stove also has a flat top for setting cooking pan on to cook food.
A wood burning space heater usually has the cast iron firebox, with a decorative way to dissipate the heat. This can be an outer layer of steel with holes or slots cut in it, or soapstone blocks, etc that absord the heat and release it evenly over time.
A Franklin stove, invented by old Ben himself, is a cast iron stove the sets in a fireplace. Fireplaces are extremely inefficient; most of the heat goes up the chimney. This Franklin stove's cast iron absorbed heat, and radiated it into the room over a longer period of time. During the time the stove gives off heat, there is no need to burn more fuel.
