Sand doesnt necessarily need to be changed every year. But just a word to the wise... Take the hour or 2 its going to take you to change it, and do it every year, This assures that you have fresh sand and that there are no residual problems from the sand that was used in the previous year.
This way you know that you sand is fresh every year, and you dont have to worry about the water filtering improperly or poorly through sand that has already been used.
Read the manuel.. But I am almost certain like once a year.
The sand in your tank never needs to be changed...they are little rocks, they don't absorb the dirt.the just trap it.
what it needs is to be cleaned really well.
Usually back washing the sand filter will get most of the dirt out and get you back in business. If your sand is really foul you might have wash it manually and add some Sand Filter Conditioner
