My pear tree has sections in some branches that look like they were hit with weed killer.?

Question:The leaves have turned brown-black. Any idea what could be causing this? Location: northern California.

Answers:
not sure, maybe a fungus.. cut off the affected branches and throw into fire or trash. Next winter spray dormant spray for fungus.
