I need to find tropical plants that require little maintenance?

Question:

Answers:
When one thinks of "tropical", you think of the tropics (with a hot and humid climate), not the desert with cacti.
Do you mean houseplants or ones for your outdoor pond area? Inside, I'd recommend pothos, Swedish ivy, or a rubber plant. Outside: Maybe a water or regular canna, water lilies, water hyacinths, or any hosta or fern along side.

elephant ears is usually a good one

Cactus! some can go for days without water, but they do need sunlight. And if you can put them out side for the summer they will bloom.
Hibiscus, Very hardy. Just need lots of sun, that's it, and water, but if you forget a day or two, it will wilt, but won't die. Comes right back.
Here's one that surprised me, Orange Jasmine. Though it's probably not technically a tropical plant, it thrives on neglect. (I'm an expert at killing house plants). The leaves are shiny and throughout the summer it has masses of small white, very fragrant flowers. I bring it inside for the winter, and lo and behold! It starts to bloom at the end of February, which is well appreciated up here in the cold, frozen north.
