How can I snake proof my yard?
Question:I'll be moving to a woodsey area with a large pond next month. I have seen many Copperheads, Rattlesnakes and many many Water Mocassins. I have three toy breed housdogs. None of my dogs weigh over 8 pounds. Does anyone know how long it would take a tiny dog to die after being bitten? It is a 30 minute drive to the nearest vet and a two hour drive if it should happen after hours and I need to go to an emergency vet.
Answers:
First of all, remove all food sources for the snakes. This means no bird feeders, the seeds attract mice which attract snakes.
Remove all piles of wood, leaves, junk piles. You are eliminating places for the snakes to hide and feel safe and comfortable.
To be completely comfortable I would make a designated "run" for the dogs to use for times when I wasn't going to be right there with them.
I would make a screened enclosure, with screen buried 6 inches into the ground and across the top as well. Kind of like a protective huge bird cage.
Remember you living in this area will be a deterrent to the snakes as well. They will avoid human contact.
Move to Hawaii. There are no snakes on any of the islands. Big fine if you try to bring one.
your dog would die, there's no doubt about that. You can try placing fake owls around your yard. The only other way is to manually dispose of the snakes.kill them. Hawks also eat snakes and so do owls. You could also introduce king snakes (harmless snakes that eat other snakes in your area), however that would be costly.
