There is something called Diatomaceous earth. It is a chalk like powder that you can spread around you yard, in your pets bedding, and into their fur. It is mildly abraisive and it kills fleas (extremely extremely effective). If you buy the kind that is food grade it is great to mix a small portion (dime size) into the pets food every so often and it acts as a natural dewormer too. (It is safe for humans to use too). Basically this is a win win product and you can get it online or check some local feed shops and see what you get. It is actually not that expensive.
Ortho Max for a spray. It can go directly on an animal. Or Orthene. It is totally non-toxic. Orthene destroys the ants and fleas exoskeleton and they die. It does it without chemicals.
Dr. Pitcairn's book recommends feeding your dog 1/4 to 1 clove of raw garlic with each feeding to get rid of fleas. It sounds crazy but most dogs love it!.
I have also heard but I do not remember where - for outside you should water your lawn often. This kills fleas and their eggs. Also, if there is a dirt spot where the dog lays often, you can cover it with a tarp to kill anything in that spot.
