Is a water conditioner really needed for my home for cleaner water?

Question:so i got a call on wed from a company called loving water inc saying they wanted to do a free water test to show me what was in my water. all they asked was for my husband and i to both be there. it was free so i said why not and scheduled it. a man showed up yesterday and tested our water and put a filtration system on my kitchen sink comparing the water that was coming directly from the kitchen sink and the water that came through the filtration system. he had us wash our hands in the water, washed a glass, etc. he showed us the calcium deposits in the water that come out of the sink. my question is can these things in the water make us sick? he also said that since the water would be cleaner i would use less detergents and cleaners, etc. i'm very skeptical about this but figured i'd get other people's opinions before i completely ruled it out.

Answers:
No you do not need a water conditioner. The only need here is "loving water"'s need for your money. Also calcium will not make you sick. If you do not like your water as it comes out of the faucet, get a filtration system from a hardware store.

in my experience, water conditioners are most needed when you are drawing water from a well. when i was growing up, we had a well, and the difference between conditioned and non-conditioned water was very apparent.

however, if you live in a decent sized city, or draw your water from a decent sized city, i would say the need is much less as the water is already treated and filtered.

so, my answer is that if you pull water from a decent sized city, a water conditioner will probably provide much less benefit than if you don't.

i do however, use a filter on my water even though i live in a large city. but a small tap connected filter or under-sink filter is much cheaper than a full water conditioning system, with much less upkeep.
You are right to be skeptical. Keep in mind that the water that comes out of your taps has to meet certain standards. In the US, we have the highest standards and, thus, the cleanest drinking water. The only reason for a filtration system is if you don't like the taste of the water or if you want to get rid of the chlorine smell. A simple carbon filter on the supply line into the house is sufficient. Or, if it is only drinking water that concerns you, you can install an in-line carbon filter to your kitchen sink.
I live in the country and have well water. (In the us) I have lots of minerals in the water. When my well way put in, it is required to get the water tested through the Health Dept. If it does not pass inspection, you are required to add maybe 2 gallons of bleach--let it set for maybe 24 hours, then run the water until you no longer get a bleach smell. If it still does not pass inspection--you repeat until it does pass inspection. Mine does pass inspection. I do have the minerals but the water is very drinkable. Clothes, however,--the whites are not good--lots of water spots on the shower--the toilet bowl needs lots of cleaning.
Need, no. Good idea, maybe. Your decision. I have lived many years without it--and have not died yet. lol More work, yes.
