It is good for plants to put humus on top of the plants?

Question:

Answers:
It isn't good to bury a plant in humus (like aged compost), because the plants need to be exposed to the air and light, and you don't want to crush anything. Nor is it good to excessively raise the ground level around the base of most plants by mounding humus up, for that blocks air movement into the soil and buries part of the stem underground where it might rot.

But adding some humus around your plants is a great idea. It improves soil structure, retains moisture, provides nutrients, and helps maintain temperatures and reduce weeds if used as a mulch. Just try not to build it up too much right at the base of the plant.

Good luck!
