What are some free ways to keep an apartment cool during the summer?

Question:How did they keep cool before electricity was invented?

Answers:
In my apt. I have a sliding glass door and a bedroom window. I open the sliding door as wide as my fan, which I hang from the top, and cover the rest of the opening with cardboard.
I put the fan in 'backwards' so that it is drawing air out instead of blowing it in. It's at the top of the doorway because heat rises of course. Then the bedroom window is open and the fresh air comes in, and at night it is cooler.

In the morning, before it warms up too much, I close the windows, drapes etc. so that all the hot air from the day doesn't come in.

open your windows, and they didn't keep it that cool before airconditioning, they just got used to the heat I guess.
When I lived in Italy one summer, what they did was to keep the shade, shutters all window coverings closed. If you do this before it heats up, it should help to keep the place cool.
I know that sunshine in your home increases heat. So if its possible buy shades that are called "room darkening" it lets in very little sun and therefore less heat. but keep those windows open. If you know the direction the wind is blowing from keep those ones open when the wind shifts run and open the windows from the other direction while closing the others.. My aunt is very frugile and lives in ND where until a few yrs ago it really didnt get "hot" and they have a constant North wind blowing and her house even when its 90+ degrees outside is always cool because of how she opens the windows and uses those room darkening shades/blinds/curtins
What i do is put up dark curtains... that way its all dark... and it stays cooler.
If you live in an area where you can leave your windows open at night, then close the house (darken it) during the day, it helps. That's how I used to keep my place cool . Also, you can hang damp clothes over an open window. When the breeze blows thru, the water cools the house as it evaporates. You may have to rewet you clothes every so often, but it works
