What can I do to keep birds from roosting (and crapping) on my deck railing?

Question:I have lived in my home for 18 years. Nothing has changed outside. This year birds started sitting on the deck rails and they are making a mess.
I found spike strips for sale on the Internet. They do not look safe and seem way too expensive at $2 per lineal foot.

It's easy to make up a potion that will encourage BIRDS to flee your property: Crush several chile peppers in 1 gallon of water, steep in the sun for several days, strain into a spray bottle and spray onto the plants you wish to protect.

If our feathered friends are wreaking havoc on your tomatoes, melons and other crops, scare devices are most effective to send them away. Any scare device will work for a few days, but birds are smart and will soon get used to it, so you have to stay a couple of steps ahead of them by changing tactics. Some effective visual scare methods include hanging aluminum pie tins, reflective Mylar tape, old CDs or large scare-eye balloons, which mimic the scary eyes of predator birds.

Commercial bird repellents and your homemade hot-pepper spray applied to the foliage and fruit is also effective. However, the best way to control bird damage is with bird netting. Install it two to three weeks before the fruit matures to keep birds at bay. If you've planted corn, cover maturing corn ears with small paper bags.

well you could adopt an outdoor cat from your local shelter. They also have these things that supposedly emit a sonic sounds that keeps birds away. What about one of those rubber snakes? Throw a couple of those around?
There is a method used by shopping malls to stop birds from doing this on the glass roofs that cover the walkways. My cousin does the same thing but on a smaller scale to protect his deck. What they do is place a carved wooden bird of prey such as an owl in a prominent position. Smaller birds will see it from the air and give it a wide birth. Hope this helps.
Maybe the birds like your deck this year because of something on it. Really, there is no way to stop birds from pooping on your deck. Try an overhead umbrella attached to a table or something that covers your deck.
