I'm looking to buy a set of pots and pans for the first time. I'm thinking stainless steel.?
Question:Could anyone offer suggestions as in what to look for and what to avoid when buying pans. I'm not much of a chef or anything, but I like to make informed purchases and I value quality, but can't swing calphalon or anything like that. Thanks.

In pots i do prefer the stainless steel , because in those pots you can use your mixer to make mashed potatoes. in the coated pans i prefer to make my steaks ,chicken etc. in .the coated pots will scratch up very easy, but is easy to clean . So it depends what you want to spend on money! I went to k-Mart and got a good stainless Set for 40-50 $ the whole set. The frying pan i bought seperate since i prefer the coated ones.
Good luck
go anodized
Wolfgang Puck has really nice sets we bought one of his a while ago from Samsclub I love them even really stuck on foods come off pretty easy.
I would suggest looking into Consumer reports for this sort of thing. Go to your library and look in the December 2005 issue or subscribe to consumer reports.com
Stainless steel pans are great, buy the thickest gauge stainless you can afford to avoid warping. I've seen nice sets in the warehouse club stores (BJ's, Sam's club, Costco) at reasonable prices.
Stainless steel are the right pots and pans to go for, try and purchase a set with copper bottoms as they retain the heat.
Good Luck
I bought Cooks Stainless Steel 10 pc cookware set from JcPenny's with the Good Housekeeping's seal of approval for $100 about 4 months ago and I love the set.
My wife loves the QVC brand Technique and it is very affordable.
I like Tramontina brand. Make sure you get 18/10 stainless steel. Most good ones have aluminum encapulated in the bottom to speed and spread even heat. They have a website you can visit.
