How can i safely glue popcorn together for a outdoor stage prop?
Question:I am making a large popcorn bucket out of a 55 gallon drum for a fundraising event. I put in a plate about 8 inches down into the drum so I dont have to fill the entire drum, only the top 8 inches. I want to use real popcorn but its surpose to be sorta windy so I need to somehow glue them together. Cant use karo syrup because of bugs. Any suggestions?
Answers:
Glue should work, or string it all together.
use a hot glue gun.
If it is only a prop and you don't intend to eat it, use some Elmer's glue. The Kayro syrup should not attract bugs if you let it dry. It would be the same as a popcorn ball.
Elmer's Glue
Ordinary glue that dries clear, like Elmer's Glue-All, should do you just fine. If this were my project, I'd do it in two stages.
First, I'd squirt glue onto the false bottom, use my finger or an implement to spread it into a thick layer, then put on the popcorn and leave it to dry for a few days where no critters can get at it. Then I'd return, squirt more glue in spirals and zigzags over the glued-down popcorn, and add a second layer of popcorn. It won't all stick, but most should, and it'll mean none of the bare false-bottom will show.
BTW, avoid "school glue" since it's water-soluble and may loosen in high humidity. Store it covered when not in use, to minimize the possibility of pests getting into it.
If it doesn't have to be edible, why not a "spray" glue?? Any home improvement store or hardware store should carry it, and that way, you can spray individual layers for more strength.
