Why does the lava in my lava lamp not rise, even after it has been on for a few hours?

Question:Sliver lava lamp wave shape, lava not rising

Answers:
As mentioend before, make sure you hav ethe right wattage bulb in place. But another distinct possibility is that the metal spring in the bottom is not seated correctly.

Inside lava lamps, there is a hoop made of a coiled spring. (You can't really see it but it's there.) This spring distributes and radiates the heat from the bulb to better heat up the 'lava' material. If the glass container was moved around (perhaps while the bulb was replaced), that spring could be sitting a little crooked and not performing its intended function well.

I had this happen to me recently. I was able to jiggle the container around a bit and get it to seat correctly. Of course the 'lava' needs to be heated up to be able to do that.

Good luck-

The wax (lava) is not getting hot enough to liquify. Check the bulb. Maybe you need a higher wattage.
Lava Lamps are great. But if you leave them on for long periods of time, the material that rises loses the chemical that helps it lighten with heat. It can be cooked right out of it. Or, the lamp needs a new bulb.
It takes mine about 20 minutes, I shake it up a little to help it warm up and separate. Here are some questions you might want to ask.

Is the bulb hot enough to melt the wax? (use 60 or above wattage)
Is the lamp old where the wax has been melted/cooled too many times?

It might be time to get a new one.
Yeah Have to agree!!
the wax aint getting hot enough!! If the bulb hasnt been replaced prior to having this problem its possible the wax has cooled and is too far away from the heat ring above the bulb.
BULB MAY HAVE GONE
The wax has an average life of approx 2000 hours more if the lamp is a top make.
the only reason that the wax(thats the "lava") rises at all is the heat of the bulb that is in the bottom,so i would say that the bulb is not strong enough,.
