Why new lettuce plants are wilting and rotting at the stems?
Question:Is it too much fertilizer, too much water, not enough dirt? Any suggestions?
Answers:
Sounds like too much water... overwatering leads to root-rot, which makes the plant incapable of absorbing water from the soil, which leads to the leaves wilting. The wilted leaves make the grower think the plant actually needs to be watered, so they add more water, making the problem worse, until the whole root system rots away and the plant dies. Too much fertilizer would burn the plant, making it turn yellow... and not enough dirt would lead to a smaller root-bound plant... but seeing as your plants are 'new' I doubt this is the problem. I'm almost 100% sure you've overwatered them.
Sounds like they are getting too much water, and lay off the fertilizer. Don't know what u mean by too much dirt.
I agree with the other answers, too much water. I would dig the plant up and replant it in soil that is not so wet from watering and don't water it/them for a few days. Just move them a row over if possible and start over. Cut off any leaves that are browned or yellow or wilted because they are no good now.
yeah it seems like too much water. maybe try mixing sand into the soil, not a whole lot though, and it will help the drainage. u said not enough dirt which makes me think u r maybe growing them in pots, which would b another reason to make sure they r getting enough drainage. make sure to use a pot with holes on the bottom, n place rocks n pebbles at the bottom of it b4 u put the dirt in there. keep an eye out for roly polies, pillbugs, sowbugs or whatever u wanna call em, cuz they will eat the roots, and watch for snails n slugs cuz they will eat the leaves. dont put poison, just pick them off everyday, keep an eye out for their trails, and enlist the help of children to pick bugs n stuff of, its a job they like. just maybe dont tell em what happens to them if they meet an unsavory end lol
