Running the central fan: what good does it do in the summer?
Question:We have central air. I've run the air conditioning in the summer, but I don't know what the use of the fan is during the summer? Is it as expensive as running the Air Conditioning. Should I just run the ac in the summer instead of the fan or are there benefits to running the fan?
Answers:
We leave our fan on to circulate the cooler air from the basement up into the hotter areas upstairs. Dunno if it keeps the air conditioning costs down for sure, but we think so...
We block the intakes from upstairs and block the outputs from downstairs.. so it's only pulling air from down and pushing it up. Reverse the process in the winter...
I leave the windows & doors open all day
Runing the fan uses the inside blower without the AC compressor. You are just circulating the air in the house without cooling it.
if you're in the house all day and its moderate, just run the fan, if its to blasted hot, treat yourself and lavish in the cool, just don't try to bring it down to 65 all the time.
If your gone in the day, open the windows and let it flow, by the time you get home at 530 in the evening, and its still hot, put it on for and hour and then go to the fan with the windows all closed. It'll be cool soon enough and it won't cost you an arm and a leg.
it helps circulate the air. say one room is a little cooler than the other or one is hotter than the other, it will help balance the temperature a bit
