Are red ants and fire ants the same thing?

I've seen fire ants in Ga. & Tx. and they look little like red ants here in Okla. Fire ants have a loose dirt mound with little visible activity. I fell into one, my left hand hit the mound and I have quick reflexes so I was up immediately. I had to circle my wrist and wipe off the horde of fire ants that bite very hard. They were covering my hand & wrist. When I got them off I was covered with blistered bites!! Nothing like the red ant, which only hurts a little bit.
