Buliding a terain inside a tank or pot---like a mini bio dome for plants and such?

Question:I have seen before where people make a planter out of a fish tank by putting some sand and cactus plants in it---is there a proper way to build a "mini bio-dome" like this (so to speak) if so I'm interested in learning how
any links to sites on how to grow cactus or on how to build a mini bio-dome would be greatly appreciated!

The list goes on. Just do a search for terrarium.

*EDIT*
There are also things called paludariums. These are partial land and partial water ecosystems. Generally they have plants as well as reptiles in them.

I have one, but it isn't a desert one, it's a sort of swampy one. I added peat moss to a fish tank, then plenty of water. Next, i pick out some marshy plants, like venus flytraps, sundews, pitcher plants, and just about anything i found liked those sorts of conditions.(note that mint thrives in these conditions, but unless that is the only thing you want to be growing, i would not put it in there.) In order to feed the carnivorous plants, just carefully and quickly open the top and drop in a few insects you would find at a pet store.
