Fleas in my home?

Question:I just moved into a house that is infested with fleas. I dont have any animals, but the last renter did. The property manager is coming to do pest control for them today, but what can I do afterwards? How do i keep them away? What do I need to wash/ vacuum? I have never had an insect problem in my home, so I am unsure of what to do, also, I have a 3year old and another baby due to come in July. PLEASE HELP!!! THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS!!!!

First--- If you are having the apartment treated by a professional, DO NOT SPRAY ANYTHING BEFORE OR AFTER THE TREATMENT.

By doing so may cause a chemical reaction, render the professional treatment ineffective and may cause damage to your furnishings.

Second-- Let the professionals deal with the flea problem. The only thing you need to do is vacuum everyday thoroughly. After vacuuming take the vacuum outside and empty it outside.

Third-- Even after the professional treatment, you will see fleas up to 2 weeks after the service. The fleas you see are only 20% of the infestation, the other 80% is in various stages of life.

The service is involved and an overnight cure should not be expected. The problem did not happen overnight, so it can not be corrected overnight.

vacumn everyday and get a flea spray from Petsmart . . if they have laid eggs in the carpet it takes a while to get rid of them . .
Get you some Flea spray bombs, Bomb the house for like 5 hours youll have to stay out.. so it can do its thing.
Just vacuum the carpets few times a week, and make sure to change the bag OFTEN, if there is one. Cuz they will come right back out. or you can by the flea powder you sprinkle on your carpet let it sit. itll kill the eggs. then vacuum it up

This should work pretty good. I had a apt in Oregon off the coast, And moving into a apt where this lady had animals... and was filthy. Fleas were a big problem in oregon anyway. just worst at my place.

Thats what i did... I vacuumed all the time. And bombed every few months,.

Hope it works.

ps: i eventualy got a cat. and the fleas still stayed calm.

Oh! almost forgot. Another thing i did,. cant remember who told me. So that you dont have to change your bags that often, you can stick a FLEA COLLAR,( piece of one..just cut it in sections. you can replace that with your bag too. One collar lasts a while)-- Stick the collar in the BAG. its said to kill the fleas youve vacuumed up.
We had the same problem when I was in high school. What we did was put flea powder down on all the carpets before we moved our stuff into the house and let it sit for a few days. We then vacuumed the house. It worked very well for us.
I have had some lectures on flea control, i think the best way to keep fleas away is hygiene. Wash your bedsheets, carpets, sofa covers etc regularly with hot water and soap...
I've had fleas in my home and it is a proccess to get them to stay out after their in. 1st. Spray a flee spray on to every carpet, rug, and cloth furniture you have. 2nd. Wash each rug or removable cloth from the furniture./Vaccum each carpet or furniture thats cloth cannot be removed. 3rd. Keep from stepping in a place that flees might jump onto your clothing and come inside your house and laying eggs.
If flees still appear repeat steps.
bryan n. has the right idea with the powder. you need to stop the flea reproduction cycle. you need to kill the existing fleas and the you have to have some type of residual compound that will kill all the baby fleas when they hatch a short time later, before they get a chance to grow and reproduce again (they grow fast and reproduce quickly). i've had success with some carpet sprays that leave a residue that's not noticeable to humans (once it dries) but is deadly to fleas. the spray bombs are also a good idea to get in behind everything.
my suggestion would be to make a stop at you nearest do-it-yourself pest control store, they usually have the best, most potent sprays/powders and can typically give you very good instructions on how to use them.
good luck, it's takes a little work but they can be controlled.
Go to a garden supply or Wal-Mart and get a small bag of
"5 % seven".Sprinkle it on carpet and drapes and in
couches. Leave it 24 hours and vacuum good. This is a
garden insecticide so its not that harmful to humans but I
would keep the baby out of the treated aria. And be cool.
Protect every one from flea bites. That is important above
all else.
I have had this problem and I also have a three year old so I was not big on bombing everything because then you have to wash everything. What I did was took a cereal bowl and but water and a couple of drops of dish washing liquid in it, I put it in the room with a desk lamp over the bowl as the only light. The fleas are attracted to the heat so they will jump in the water the soap keeps them from jumping back out. I also vacuumed before and after this to get the eggs. After vacuuming it is important to remove the bag, put it in a plastic trash bag and remove it from the house. If you don't the eggs will hatch while still in the house and you will be back to square one.
