Rough value of a steamer trunk?
Question:I have what I believe is an old steamer trunk it does not have any racks drawrers or shelves it looks in fair condition although it does not have a lock on it. It is also missing the handles. I cannot find a date on it Im not sure where to look. When I was wiping it off it has a black appearence but it looked kinda green too. Sorry I do not have any photo to show. But planning on putting it in a yard sale was wandering if it had any value?
Answers:
Might depend on where you are. They would yard-sale here for about $30 but a dealer would want $80 for the same trunk in a shop.
"Steamer trunk" is an often misused term. A true steamer trunk will be quite large, have drawers on one side (you stand them on end to open them) and a clothes hanging rack on the other.
They are worth a lot more than common trunks which are more properly foot lockers. The real money is in blanket chests dating from the 18th. century, which oddly are worth more with a flat top than with a rounded one.
A step up from that is the sea-chest with a rounded bottom.
don't know
If it has a domed top, and is about 36inches long, by about 24inches tall, you can ask 125.00 and probably get 80-100. If it is a flat top, and still has the oak/wood bands in tack, 75-100. Since it is in fair condition, I would take whatever you can get.
