Electrostatic home A/C filters?
Question:I'm looking at getting an electrostatic air conditoner filter for my home. Has anyone ever used one or know if they are better the the good store brands? I also want to know how they work? Do they use electricity? I know they cost a lot so I wanted to know if they are worth buying. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

Sean, I love mine. It appears to have cut down on the amount of dust in my house. If you change your filter on a regular basis, as you should, then the filter will pay for itself within a year or so.
No, they do not use electricity. They use electrostatic properties to pull the impurities out of the air. I think they way that it works is that dirt has a (-) negative charge and the filter has a positive charge. The negative and positive attract, causing the dust to become entrapped in the filter. Hope that helps.
They will take out pollen and other contaminates down to 3 micron.(pollen is 5 micron) They mount to the side of your furnace where the return air comes into it. They do require electricity to "zap" the particulates. They are a maintenance required item. You need to remove the grids inside every other month and rinse off. Some people place them in a dishwasher. You would be just as happy with a HEPA filtration system. This is approximately half the cost. Any Q's feel free to em me.
