Pet/dog safe herbicides/weed killer?

Question:I want to kill the weeds and grass in the backyard in order to plant new grass, but i was wondering if there is a pet safe way to do this or a pet safe product that i can use, or is the only way to keep them indoors for a few days??

Answers:
I use a mixture of 3parts vinegar to 1 part dish detergent. It wouldn't work for a large area as it will kill everything, excepts pets.
