I live near west hollywood and a recently remodeled 1bd/1ba is about $1500 monthly. Its around $2000 for a 2bd. 1bd condos across the street are selling for mid 300's to low 400's. But near USC/downtown, you can get a 3 bedroom for ~$1600 a month. It depends on the area that you're looking at in LA.

The average rent for a apt or small house is $1250 a month. There's some older apt buildings where people are paying less but they have been living there a long time. Many of these old buildings are fast disappearing...they are being torn down and condos are going up or some have been converted to luxury apt.
As for homes take a look at the chart at this website. A new condo in the area of LA where I live sells for $300.000 and houses are even higher.
