How can I get rid of an infestation of fruit flies?

Question:1- What is considered an infestation? They are in my kitchen, living room, walk in closet that connects to my bathroom and in my bathroom

2- All the food that is normally kept on the counter in the kitchen is in the fridge. The dishes are done, the sink is clean, garbage is taken out and the garbage can has been cleaned with bleach.

3- My friend suggested I poke holes in a container and put honey in it so they will get trapped but none are in there yet. It's the only food on my counter right now

4- There's no dirty dishes or food in my living room, closet or bathroom

5- My place tends to get really hot during the day because I don't have the a/c going until I get home. Could the heat have something to do with it?

It's disgusting and I have a friend coming to stay with me in a few weeks and I want them gone. What else can I do? I've been spraying Raid but I don't want all those chemicals in the air. I'm tired of this.

Something my mom told me to do, and it really worked!!

Goodbye Fruit Flies: To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small
glass, fill it 1/2" with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish-washing liquid, mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!

-If that doesn't work, try out this website I attached! Good luck!

Don't use Raid. It will kill YOU dead.
You still got some fruit somewhere that is attracting the flies. That is what they smell.
The heat makes the fruit rot faster. That is all there is to it. You are missing the food item(not in the fridge) but on or under the counter.
I have no AC and it is hot, but I have no flies. They are heavily attracted to peaches and that family.think of all the fruit within the past couple of weeks eaten there and look for something out of place.
Do you have any house plants? Every now and then I seem to get hit with these fruit flies...and ask myself the same questions you're asking now. Although the little critters are called "fruit flies", the eggs may be living in the dirt of your house plants (if you have any). These fruit flies are very content to live within the realm of your household plants. If this is the case, a mixture of soap and water sprayed on the plants may help. Any standing water or a leaking faucet will be enough to keep these little flyers coming back for more! So stop any leaks, drain any standing water, and continue doing what you are already doing.and a little patience..you will get rid of them.
I'd go with Lindsay.from personal experience. I went to Jamaica for 10 days, came back and my roomie had not taken out the trash and had multiple science experiments in his room. I took several bottles and put some apple cider vinegar (grocery store brand works great) in the bottom. about a quarter of the bottle.

Next, roll some paper to create cones. Tape the sides and push th cones into the bottles, making sure the cones extend to about 1/2 way in the bottle.

Place them all over the house, as many as you can make...don't be shy.

The flies will smell the vinegar, crawl down the funnerl and then are too stupid to find their way out.

Within 3-4 days, the house was clear. I kept them out for another week just to make sure any egss weren't hatching somewhere...
i am sure that the heat helps them breed and multiply but try to keep all of any food in the fridge or in closed containers try to push them out a window if you can or get a fly strip and good luck
