Gate or no gate?

Question:I want to build a gate on my driveway to my property. However, my land is separated by a private road through which residents pass to reach their homes. The drive is on oneside and a wood on the other side. If I build my gate it will make mean, when its closed, that the postman, milkman or any other delivery person will have to pull up outside the gate. This will block the private road for a short period of time to those wishing to exit and may be a nuisance. I am quite within my rights to build a gate on my own land but I can foresee irritated neighbours who don't have 30 seconds of patience. So do I build the gate or not?

Answers:
Build it, it's your land, but why does the delivery man have to block the private entrance ? could he not park on the other side of the road ? but for the sake of 30 seconds , I would not let it bother me,

Sounds like too much hassle i would not bother.
Build it but explain to your neighbours prior to doing it!
Well its your choice i suppose, depends how much you want to pee off ya neighbours, if you dont get on anyway, then go ahead and build it, no great loss... but if you all get on just great, probably not really the best idea, have you talked to them??!!!

good luck!
Do you have the room to recess the gate, by a car/van length, into your property? This will save any blockage of your neighbour's passage!
are you home all day long to open and close this gate for passing people? I would be annoyed if my neighbors did that. Just because you have the right to build dosen't make it right.
i think u shouldnt as u will disturb ur neibours then
go ahead with the gate its not your fault its like that you have the right to securer your propety even make it nice let them sort it out after all its only a postman milkman sure your neighbours are not that petty
an Englishman's home is his castle in my book? you already know your in your rights to do whatever you like on your own property, but show a little bit of tact first, and tell your neighbours what you are proposing to do first? it will be better than them waking up one morning to find the gate blocking them off?
Can you not build the gate back from the road. We have a longish drive ( 600 feet i think ) and we've put the gate about 30 feet into our land so anyone can pull up off the road.

Personally, if you can't put it further back, i'd still say you are quite ok to build the gate.

If in the future it does become a problem you can always leave it open during the weekend or busy times so no-one gets blocked in, and maybe close it at night if you are looking for security.

What about an auto opener so that as someone pulls up, it auto opens. you could just lock it at night or when you go away.
Check your deed restrictions. You may not have a legal right to build the fence. And I suspect the other residents will have a justification for legal action.
ask the neighbours if they think its a good idea for security and privacy and if they say yes you could share the bill
good luck
