Weekly pool maintenance?
Question:Ok I know that you need to shock your pool weekly and also had the maintenance dose of chlorine tabs. However is it necessary to add any algecide to prevent algae growth if all the other chemicals are ok?
Answers:
Don't know what kind of pool you have, but I don't shock my pool unless it's necessary. I throw a bag of it in the water when I'm finished "opening" it from winter, but just for extra measure as I clean my pool year-round. As long as your chlorine levels are where they should be, shocking is not something you HAVE to do, as shock is nothing more than concentrated chlorine.
Having said that, you shouldn't have to add algaecide either, until you've got an infestation. As long as your chemicals, especially chlorine, remain where they should AND you have optimum circulation in your pool, algae won't have a chance to grow. If you keep good circulation, anything that actually does grow won't have a chance to cling to the sides and spread. Once (most) algae clings to something, it can grow much easier.
Of course, there's nothing saying you can't add the stuff for your own piece of mind, but you'll save money in the long run. You can buy chlorine tabs with algaecide in them, even. But most algae treatments will make your water undesirable to swim in. Algaecide is pretty expensive as it is, as most places that sell it consider it a "specialty" pool product. Just keep your pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels where they should be, and the only thing you'll have to worry about is cleaning out dirt and debris and backwashing your filter.
Yes, when you shock your pool add athe algecide also. That why you don't have to worry about it. My brother is certified pool man, and he taught me to take care of mine and I always have the best looking pool around in the summer. Good luck.
