Is this a beetle??

Question:I live in South Carolina. I have found many japanese beetles destroying my plants. I have also found these gigantic looking beetles that are brown. They are about 2 inches long, 1/2-1 inch wide. They are brown. The one I saw today got into a bucket I had sitting outside. I am pretty sure I have seen them fly. I know it is not a palmetto bug. The one I saw today had a thing on its butt that looked like a stinger or something. These things are big and nasty. What is it and how do I get rid of them? Thanks!!

P.S. Any tips on getting rid of japanese beetles would also be appreciated. I have tried Sevin (the one that hooks up to the hose) but I have found that the beetles have returned!
