Patio Doors?
Question:We have ordered new patio doors. The whole unit was delivered today including two doors in the middle and a panel at each side. The little windows on the panels open outwards but the doors will open inwards. Is this correct or do patio doors normally open out into the garden or, does it not matter?
Answers:
Of course it matters! Atrium type patio doors should open in. If installed backward, they will not lock properly. Since it sounds like they are pre-hung, look at the threshold- it should slope toward the outside, instead of directing rain in, under the door. The stop molding around the frame should be toward the outside, and most importantly, the hinges should be inside the house, where the burglars can't get at them. The panel windows should open out; again to keep rain out of the house.
Doesn't really matter but to be honest - I think it should have been all opening outward - you should have checked they were what you wanted prior to accepting delivery
All patio doors are diferent, some have a twist and tilt design, which means you can open them inwards, but also tilt the top inwards as well.
Mine open outwards, but if you ever look at some flats with patio doors they open inwards.
Better the doors open in,otherwise if they opened out and a gust of wind caught them it could be expensive.
Mine open outwards but i've fitted locks to loads of doors that open inwards so i don't think it matters.
Doesnt matter. I have 2 sets of patio doors one is downstairs leading out from my living room they open out. The other set is in our masterbedroom they open in
What matters obviously is whether you'd rather lose the space inside or outside the house. If you have a summer table and seats outside, they can't be in the way of an outward opening door, for example.
