Answers:
The wood slats go across you normal, everyday bedframe. The mattress is a spring based mattress. The bottom portion of the mattress is spring loaded. This way you don't need a seperate box spring and regular mattress. Kinda like what is found on a bunk bed. We have two.
Update: I looked at the remote controlled base you are talking about. Yes it will bend the mattress. I would buy a mattress from them that is designed to go with that base. If their mattresses are too expensive, at least call their customer support and see what kind of mattress it is that they suggest use.
Good luck.
It's called LADE (pronounced LAID). It's for platform beds, like the Ikea Malam beds. What it does is replace the need for a box spring mattress.
No, it does not bend your mattress. I have an Ikea bed that uses the lade and belive you me, it very quiet and comfortable.
