How much blended soil mix should I use as soil amendment?

Question:Not sure how much to mix with my current dirt to prepare soil as a vegetable bed. What happens if I use too little or too much of the amendment?

Answers:
It depends on what type of ammendment you're adding.

If it's organic compost like you would buy by the pickup load from a fuel store, it's safe to go up to 50%. If it's steer or cow manure, much less (20%) depending on how 'hot' (fresh) it is. [Caution: you may have more weed seeds here]

With either, you can work it in to the entire planting area, or work each planting hole individually. Make sure you work it in well. Consider adding some nitrogen.

If you use too little, you won't see much improvement in your yield over last year. Too much of the organic compost may make your soil too loose, making it difficult to keep your crops upright and letting water and nutrients run right past the roots. Too much of the manure will burn the roots.
