Drum noise. (At home and University). - (UK ANSWERS ONLY PLEASE)?
Question:I have an acoustic drum kit and usually practise 1 hr most days.
At home I live in terraced housing and not wanting to disturb the neighbours I play at highly acceptable hours (12-6pm). Do drums exceed the legal decibel limit?
At university I live in a shared flat in halls that has a couple living downstairs and hall corridors across a large lawn about 30m away. With expected courtesy I spoke to my neighbours downstairs, and told them if they have any problems tell me and I would practise for no more than 1hr a day, and I'd finish by 9pm.
They are reasonable people.
However the wardens have received several complaints from across the lawn. Despite the fact I keep the windows shut and there is 30m between us.
The people downstairs have no problem (even with the bass) so why do those selfish beings complain. I'm within my tenancy agreement but the wardens just walk in even when you aren't in. Should I just point out that I've done all I can and im within all legality?
Answers:
there's a little glitch in your tenancy agreement, its called the law .
One assumes you are on a music course and that the University has the appropriate studio equipment including soundproof practice rooms, do the math. Failing that get an electronic set of drums.
It sounds like you are within your rights and i would just point this out.
Just make sure the people across your lawn are not student nurses, they may be working night shifts and trying to sleep during the day!
in the UK you used to be able to play youre drums as loud as you want between 9am and 9pm i think. The police can 'ask' you to turn it down, but you can tell them to get stuffed.
But now we have a new thing called Anti Social Behaviour Orders, which basiclly means if youre numbers complain enought, the local council can go to a court and ask to get one for you. If you breach it you can go to prison.
Drums are a bit different from a stereo. I played drums in my room at uni once and nearly got thrown out. If I had done it again the police could have been involved. I bought some rubber pads to put on them so I could play silently.
If you want to play loud go to a rehearsal room.
I used to have a kit and it could be heard far away, so now why don't you sell the kit and for 249 pounds you can get a brand new good quality electronic kit from Sound Control with loads of acoustic and electronic kits programmed in and even 50 user songs to jam to, headphones on, problem sorted happy co existing neighbours. People are trying to study and don't want the noise yeah?

your doing one of two things that annoy neighbours and the other one is pets so if you want to pursue your hobby move out to somewhere else
