Does anybody know of a good way to deter bears from getting in my garbage cans?

Question:Any good 'home remedys' to keep bears out of my garbage? I've heard hot pepper may do it, but I don't know for sure...

Answers:
ummm..try not to pay too much attention to that other answer. Someone forgot his meds.

Lock up the trash can in a sturdy shed or your garage, or you'll need to build a bear proof garbage can (unfortunately, you'll need a forklift to move it.)

Bears are very strong, smart, and determined scavengers. Their sense of smell is very acute...you can't hide the trash from them for long. They are willing to put things in their mouths that would make you vomit just to look at (rotting flesh is a delicacy to them). All you can really do is make your trash harder to get to than your neighbors, because bears (just like people) are somewhat lazy and will look for the easy mark every time.

Are you ******* serious? A ******* bear?
What the **** man, if a bear is all up in your **** grab that mother ****** and then **** with people. Be like "***** you straight step on my lawn again my bear will straight **** your **** up AWMPH" and then straight up bear eating asshole neighbor's arm

I was reading your ? out loud and my bf said a shot gun...good luck with the bear thing my friend u will need it !!
If you aren't able to pull your trash indoors (except when it's to be picked up, of course) see if you can purchase a bear proof trashcan in your area. Otherwise, as another poster mentioned, you need to make your garbage less appealing than that of others. For a list of ideas, go to the attached website. Scroll to the bottom. All of the good stuff is down there.
Put garbage out ONLY the same morning they are picking it up. Not at night because they are used to a easy food source and they will continue to return to it, and being nocturnal, they do their scavenging under cover of darkness. If bearproof containers are out of the question, i've heard bears are not fond of the smell of mothballs.
