HoneyBees have taken over our Hummingbird feeders, and are running off the Hummingbirds. What to do ??
Question:
Answers:
Honeybees have a limited depth they can access. Find a feeder or modify your existing feeder so that bees can't climb in it and the holes that hummingbirds use to access the sugar water is at least a quarter inch or so deep and not wide enough for a bee to get her head in there.
If you must rid them from the bird house, spray bee sprey in there after dark, and vacume out the corpses the next day.
Take down the feeder. Offer a dish of sugar-water in the area for the bees to find. Then put the hummingbird feeder back. You can always spray the bugs, but let's try this first. The bees are not being able to find their normal natural source of nectar so they are finding the sweet like the birds. I have issues with ants and squirrels. Good luck!
You need to change the type of feeder you are using. The type that you have (I bet) is one that the nectar is above the feeder ports for the birds. This forces the nectar down to the very lip of the feeder ports, and therefore the bees can drink from it. If you buy a basin-style feeder, the nectar is below the ports. The birds have long beaks (no really) and even longer tongues. They can reach the nectar even when it is running low, but the bees can't. I have one that even has an ant moat to keep ants from getting in. I love it. It is so easy to clean too. Check out this brand>
