Funnky smell in my basement... any ideas?
Question:there was an addition put on my house, they also expanded the basement underneath. when they went through the block in the basement to make a doorway they didnt cap off the openings in the block. they shoved some insulation in the holes. the problem is when it gets humid in the basement we get a funky smell.... almost like dog chit that comes out of the blocks. anyone have any idea what this could be or did they really shove dog chit in these blocks?
Answers:
Mold or Mildew of some kind or something like a mouse has gotten in there and died and it smells when it gets wet. Or it could just be the insulation getting damp.
your best bet is to take the door off and look inside those bricks for yourself. concrete blocks sweat when there is humidity present. some types of insulation use flamaldehyde for some reason and that stuff stinks like something nasty, especially when its wet. if anything, call the contractor and tell him to fix the problem or your taking him to court. unsanitary **** smell may lead to sickness in the house. get it fixed.
you could buy a dehumidifier.. i have one .. keeps my tools free of rust. keeps the basement dry and cool ...and reduces mold and mildew. try some lysol air freshner, kills mold and mildew too
