Here's the truth. No traps, tricks or gimmicks are going to eliminate the problem. As an exterminator, the last thing I want to recommend is pesticide. Unfortunately, the only thing that will work is pesticide. Your concern with pesticide exposure is understandable. Here's a bearable alternative.
Call a pest control product STORE, and ask for a GEL BASED Ant control product. Emphasize GEL BASED, NOT LIQUID or GRANULE. It comes in a dispenser tube ready to use. It is used by placing a small (size of a nail head) amount along door jams, furniture legs, table legs, corners, and baseboards. The ants eat this bait and share it with the other ants of the colony. Domino effect, all the ants consume it, and the colony is eliminated. Read the directions or ask the store person and use it properly. The best part of it is it's EFFECTIVE and comes with little or no exposure to you or your co-workers.
Common names are Maxforce Ant Gel, Advance Dual Control, Drax, or Uncle Albert's Honeydew Gel (I kid you not, probably the most effective too). If you use it right, the ant issue will be controlled in a few days to a week, no spray, no fumes, no crazy cleaning afterwards.
