King snakes...docile?
Question:I live out in five acres of wooded land and have seen several snakes from afar, including these giant black snakes that I'm told are "king snakes". Several people have told me, when I was confessing my fear of snakes, that these snakes won't bother me, they are good snakes to have around to keep mice away and that they are docile.
WELL, I was in the driveway when I heard a noise on the gravel. I turn around to find a smallish King snake coiling up and looking like he was going to pounce on me. I don't see how I possibly could have scared HIM, I was a good ten feet away and he was behind me. I, of course, unleash a bloodcurdling scream and run into the house and look out the window and he was gone.
So was this ***** going to attack me if I hadn't seen him first?
Answers:
No they will not hurt you.You have a black snake or sometimes called rat snake.I had one get in my house through bottom of my back door.It too was coiled up when I walked up on it.It looked at me turned around and went back out. They keep rat down. They are more scrared of you then you are of it.
I don't think king snakes are black. they are a different color.
Look up king snake in wikipedia.
You have "black snakes" they have teeth but are not venomous. AND they can bite.
Leave them alone, they are GOOD snakes to have around because they kill copperhead snakes and copperheads are poisonous.
You don't have to be afraid of them. They are more afraid of you than you, of them. (although you might not think so...<smiles>)
That snake that looked like it was going to bite you was trying to scare you away 'cause it felt that you were to close for it to run away.
animals do something called "flight or fight" response. look that up in wiki too.
LD
(who has a "pet" black snake in the backyard. it's gotten used to us humans)
If I remember correctly King snakes are not black, so I would check the description. King snakes however are really good ones to have around for keeping pests away and other snakes.
I assume you live in Florida and the large long black snakes are Black Racers. They move fast and are non-dangerous. They will keep the rats, spiders, and other critters away.
A king snake is not all black but has stripes on it, it isn't poisonous either. It will eat other animals also.
