Can I use my grill after using a fire extinguisher on it, even if I then scrubbed it clean?

Question:I have a Weber grill. It is my second one; the first one caught fire and so I used a fire extinguisher on it. Since it was covered with a layer of white chemical powder, I got a new one. Today, it happened again, but the grill is pretty new. Can I just replace the grill and flavorizer bars, scrub the rest and start grilling again? Or will those chemicals make the food unsafe or taste bad no matter how I clean it?

Answers:
As long as you clean it and then burn the charcoal for awhile before you put any meat on it then it will be fine...the fire will burn any harmful chemicals off ..

Your grill is fine...people use ovens and stoves after using a fire extinguisher so a grill is no worse.

Nice to hear from you.hope all is well...hey by the way...my bites on my arm you helped me with, ended up turning into a full blown staff infection. It spread and I almost had to be admitted to the hospital. Thank goodness for your advice or I would have ignored it for a week or so...

Just clean it well. There's nothing poisonous in the chemicals.
You got an answer that there was nothing poisonous in the chemicals and that may be false! if you have a baking soda fire extinguisher, then you are ok. If it truly is a chemical powder extinguisher, that stuff is NOT safe. I used to work for a fire safety company. You MUST THOROUGHLY clean EVERYTHING about that grill. ALL the parts inside. If it's thorough, I think you'll be okay. If you can afford a Halon fire extinguisher, that's the ONLY kind to have. There is no mess and since it's a gas, it's virtually non toxic. Safety Pro is the only one I know that offers that. They have a web site I think, just google it. Plus they have a free replacement policy (sounds like you'll be utilizing this one) and there is a ten year guarantee on it. You can't beat that! You can use the extinquisher over and over again until gone and you don't have to replace it if you do use it. But why not, they offer free replacement. conditions apply. Or you can specifically get an extinquisher that has baking soda in it as the fire fighting agent, but they don't last long. Or keep a large box of baking soda handy when grilling. Good luck and keep an eye on that grill! : )
First of all I would suggest to never use a fire extinguisher on a grill because it is a mess and not very healthy to cook on after the fact if its not cleaned throughoughly. Second of all you need to clean your bottom tray where the grease collects and your burner tubes really often and fires wouldn't happen. I would suggest replacing your grates and flavorizer bars before you cook on it again just to be safe. You can also look online at Weber.com for troubleshooting tips and cleaning and recipies or call their 1800 number.
If you clean it with the right stuff it will be safe again, but be very careful to get it all. That stuff can kill you.
