My bedrooms each have two registers in the ceilings. The ones at the outside walls work but not the others?

Are they open? There should be a little dial that open and closes. Try that.
Yes, it could be the return. Pretty easy to find out as well. When the furnace is running, hold some paper (like a tissue) near the register. If it is the return, air should be drawn in to the register and make the paper move.
