Stinky fridge.?
Question:my fridge freezer broke down a few weeks ago and we have been waiting for the spare part to arrive. When i opened it today it stinks to high heaven!
Do you have ant ideas how i can get rid of this horrid stench?
Its like nothing i have smelt before. Just vile.
There was no food or liquid left in there over this time.
Answers:
Remove shelves and ice trays. Wash them thoroughly with hot water and detergent. Then rinse with a sanitizing solution (1 tablespoon unscented, liquid chlorine bleach per gallon of water).
• Wash the interior of the freezer, including the door and gasket, with hot water and baking soda. Rinse with sanitizing solution as above.
• Leave the door open for about 15 minutes to allow free air circulation.
• Wipe inside of unit with equal parts vinegar, lemon juice and water. Vinegar and lemon juice provides acid which destroys mildew.
If smell persists
• Stuff freezer with rolled newspapers.
• Close the door and leave for several days. Remove paper and clean with vinegar and water.

The stench will be from bacteria that is left in the fridge. You need to wash the whole of the inside with a mild bleach fluid. This will get rid of every wif.]
Afterwards you can get fridge deoderiser from places like Asda or Co op. These are quite effective.
clean it with white vinger and leave a bowl of water with concebntrated lemon juice in overnight, it actually absorbs the bad smell
Put some rock salt in a little bowl with half a lemon,the salt will absorb moisture and the lemon should freshen the fridge.
doesn't KIM AND AGGIE suggest using Lemon Juice. Anything is worth a try if it stinks that bad.
clean it out with disinfectant (zoflora smells lovely) and make sure you leave the door open a little when you leave it again, it's bacteria giving off the smell (which is normal) adn it's trapped by the seal around the fridge door
this is totally normal, you're not being unclean or anything, turned off fridges should always be left with the doors slightly open
Try wiping it out with a solution of Milton (baby equipment sterilising fluid) or bicarb of soda. You can buy fridge fresheners to leave in the fridge all the time - the one I've got is egg shaped, I bought it from Sainsbury's. You could also leave the door open for a while, see if that helps.
sorry too late. you have to remove it somehow but the smell does come everytime you open it. you should have emptied it when you knew you had to wait anyway.
Cut a lemon in half and put a bit of baking soda in the middle of one half. the baking soda absorbs the bad smell and the lemon gives out a fresh one!
I think most fridges have this problem when they are defrosted.
Make sure you have no water in the drainage try, clean the interior and leave the doors open to the air. It will go away when you turn it on. I think it's a combination of stale air and stagnant water.
If you have an older model did you get to the very bottom of the fridge under the crisper?
Usually if there is any milk that has spilled it ends up there. You will probably find a rubber stopper that you can open to clean under and around.
Also, if much has melted it goes thru there, you will have a pan under the fridge that catches the water, look to see how full that is.
New or Old, clean out completely with lysol or some form of cleaning agent that rids of mold and bacteria, even lemon juice or vinigar is a good cleaner.
After all is completely clean, leave the door open to air for awhile and dry completely. Then put a couple of boxes of baking soda in the fridge one in the door on on top shelf back and one on bottom shelf back (you can split one box to three bowls) and keep this way for a day or so.
I do this when I first move into a home or our same thing happened with the electric and the milk went bad.
I just saw this on some show last week: WET NEWSPAPERS- get old nespaper wet, wring out and let it sit in fridge after you get it back running. This is supposed to be a no fail trick.
take everything out of your freezer, get some coffee, put some out on a plate or a cloth, close the door, and leave it for a hour, and then remove the coffee and it'll smell great!
Clean it out with bleach and then leave a little tub of real ground coffee-not instant in it for a few days and it will be smelling completely normal again! It absorbs the bacteria or something!
A mixture of baking soda and water will absorb some of the oder. Mix it kinda thick and let set on surface. After washing off put an open box in freezer and leave door ajar with a clothes pin or something about 1/2" to allow air flow. Will smell at first till it airs out. You need to leave the soda box in freezer for a few months to ensure no odor enters the fridge one you get it fixed as some will enter insulation in walls but will go away with time. Change soda box once a month. Pour it down the kitchen sink and it will dissolve any residue in the drain on the way down.
you need to wash it out with hot soapy water then put some bicarbonate of soda in a little dish and leave for a day or two to absorb the smell.Leave the door open as well as this adds to the cause if left shut.
do not use bleach use bicarbonate of soda got from most supermarkets this does the trick as bleach will make it smell nice but leave the chemical behind,when you have cleaned it with bi carb cut a lemon in half and put in the fridge for 2 hours then remove lemon and leave fridge ajar for 24hours prop door open with something.xx
Soak a paper towel in vanilla and put it inside...This is a great trick that I have used and it really works.Smells GREAT and no chemis.As the vanilla drys it deodorizes the fridge, freezer or cooler...We leave one in our cooler at the end of camping season and when we open it up the next year...Ahhhh!.Try it you won't be disappointed!
In the future if you unplug you should also prop the door open a bit!
I agree with Baby Doo, bicarb and water and leave the door open. never ever shut a fridge door that is switched off.
Baking soda and water will get rid of any smell. 1/2 cup baking soda in 1 gallon of water wipe down and leave the doors propped opened.
Freon is a horrid smell. If the fridge is clean then that's what you are smelling. Good Luck.
Wash it out and place instant coffee at the bottom on a piece of Kitchen Roll.
The coffee absorbs the bad smell & omits a coffee aroma :0)
All of the other suggestions are quite good. But if you have a yard and a wide door, such as an arcadia, the easiest thing to do is to take that sucker out back and spray it out with the hose. Spray it with some bleach and let it sit for a minute and then spray it out with the hose. Open a box of baking soda and leave it in there once the fridge is clean and dry and back inside of the house.
This is what i do at home
get a lemon and a lime, slice them in to thin pieces
put in to 2 sepererate bowls 1 top of the freezer one at the bottom
add some hot water to the bowls, close the freezer door for 2hours and the anti-bacterial agents in the citrus fruits will shift most of the grime from the vapours, saving you some scrubbing time, it works for me every time
you could also do this with the microwave and other home appliances
