How can I effectively fire-proof my home for the hot summer months?
Question:There are children under the age of 10 in the house.
Answers:
Are you concerned about exterior fires (wildfires) burning the house, or fires starting inside of the house?
No house is totally safe from fire, unless there are absolutely zero combustable materials either inside or used in the construction (think of a empty concrete box). But there are things you can do to help prevent fires and protect lives, depending on the danger you face.
If you are concerned about external wildfires: 1) clear combustable vegitation and construction (fences) away from the building, 2) have good access for fire equipment, 3) use non-combustable materials in construction (masonry, metal, etc), 4) have an evacuation plan if necessary (along with a "evacuation bag" with items in it that can not be replaced, like treasured photos, legal docs, etc), 5) know how to contact the fire department, 6) if you live in a rural area, provide a water source if possible.
Steps to avoid interior fires: 1) make sure your building is in good repair so there is no voids where fire can spread or sources of accidental ignition, 2) Keep combustables away from ignition sources such as stoves, fireplaces, and heaters, 3) do not store flammable liquids in buildings, 4) supervise children at all times (no matches or lighters about!), 5) have an evacuation plan in place for occupants and a place where all will meet, 6) know how to contact the fire department, 7) have a fire extinguisher handy for very small fires only, 8) have smoke alarms installed and check them regularly.
There are so many other possible ideas. Check with your local fire department and ask what they suggest for your situation and concerns.
Good luck!
