Does polyeurathane lighten wood when refinishing floors?
Question:We are refinishing our floors and I went by today to look at the them and they appear darker than the original stain I chose. Is this common for them to lighten up with the polyurathane is applied ? & could it be that they may still be wet and appear darker?
Answers:
Th darkness of the stain can vary, depending on how heavily you applied the stain and how long you let it stay on the wood before wiping it away. These are both likely reasons why it appears darker. However, the type of polyurethane you apply will affect the color as well. A water based will dry and age clear, and oil based turns a nice amber color with age. Also the color and shine will change based on if you use a high gloss/semi-gloss/ satin, etc: Basically it is almost impossible to make your floor the EXACT same color you had before. Because each time you do a wood floor it is a unique process.
I dunno
If the polyurathane is a gloss or semi-gloss base, the floors will appear to have a "sheen" to the surface, which may seem to lighten up the stain, but all it does is just add a shine to the floor, it doesnt actually lighten the stain. If the stain is positively too dark for your liking, you may have to re sand the floor to remove some of the dark stain. Good luck.
