Does anyone know anything about sewing machines vs sergers?

Question:I need to know if I can buy a sewing machine with a built in serger or are they always sold as separate machines? Thanks for any help I get! :)

I am assuming you want to purchase just one machine; or at least only one at this time.

Your best bet is probably to start with a good zig-zag sewing machine. They will handle much more versatile projects than a serger. While there are electronic models that sell for several thousand dollars, you can get a good machine for under $900. How much you spend will depend on your projected usage and experience sewing .

I basically sew on my sewing machine and finish seams on my serger...

If you are doing. only.. knit clothing for children that will have a limited life because children grow so quickly; you might be able to get by with a top of the line serger.

I would recommend that you get.. lessons.. before you purchase any machine. If you are good at reading and following directions you might be okay on your own with a sewing machine.

Sergers are much more difficult to thread and adjust tension and require a lot of practice before you have any usable skills. Lessons... are offered at shops that sell only sewing machines and sergers... you will not get much help if you buy a machine from Wal-mart or Sears.

Any time I've ever seen them they've been separate machines. But, who knows with the technology that they've been coming out with. If you didn't want to buy a serger you could always do your own serging by sewing a zig-zag pattern across the top of the seam to prevent it from coming out. . .
Hi,

You will need to buy two separate "sewing" machines. You can't bet the Serge for sewing up seams & finishing edges. They are fast moving & make your item look like "store brought".
They are separate machines. I have both types of machines and they work wonderful together. I have a Singer sewer and a Pfaff serger. Research sergers before you buy. My first one didn't do a lot but the edging. I ended up taking it back and upgrading to one that has all the bells and whistles. I use mine a lot. Don't let a sales person talk you into something you don't want or need. Sergers can be big bucks. My first one was $500 but the new one was $1500. Don't spend what ya don't need.
You can buy a machine that has a serger on it. It is at the back so you swivel machine round. Better buy two machines.
I have three sewing machines and a serger. Each machine is different weight for different jobs.
SEWING MACHINES ARE TO MAKE SIMPLES STITCHES AND THE SERGE ARE FOR THE EDGES, THEY WILL LOOK THAT YOU GOT THE CLOTHES FROM THE STORE.
I've only seen a hybrid machine once (long time ago) and it did not do either job very well.
That i know of you get it seperetly ive never seen a sewing machine with a serger but try to go were they sell sewing machines and ask im sure they would be glad to help you^_^
a sewing machine and a serger are 2 very diffrent machines the serger is for finishing the edge of a seam while a sewing machine acually makes the seam and yes they are always sold as seperate machines
Take a look at the inside of the shirt you're wearing. See those loops sewn in the edge? Thats what a serger does. They are two completely different machines, and as a general rule, sergers cost more.

Sergers differ from sewings machine in several ways. Sergers have up to four threads, an loop the thread in a way that in keeps fabric from fraying. They also have blades that cut off excess fabric as you feed it through. The also sew more stitches per minute than a sewing machine, up to about 1,400.
Yes there is light at the end of the tunnel. My wonderful husband bought me a "combo" machine, it is a heavy duty (can sew up to 16 layers of denim / leather) sewing machine with a built in serger!!. It's the greatest thing ever because you don't have to be switching machines, only "settings". The brand is SINGER . Best of Luck !!
I don't think any sewing machines come with a built in serger. But even if you can't, you can buy an attachment to hook to your sewing machine that will make it work like a serger. You can get them at most fabric stores like JoAnns or Hancock. They would know if any come with both features.
