Why do my houseplant leaves turn brown on the ends?

Question:

This can be a byproduct of either over watering, or under watering. Feel your leaves at the highest point of the plant - if they are soggy and feel like a soaked cloth, then the leaves are turning brown because of too much water. If they feel brittle and almost crack in your hands like a dry Christmas tree branch, then the plant needs more water. The best way to tell when your plant needs water is to stick your finger (or a straw) into the soil as deep as you can get it, and if it's still moist at the bottom, then you don't need water. Since the roots (obviously) are at the bottom, this is where the importants upply of water is, not at the top. The other reason for brown leaves could be too much sunlight, but if your plant is indoors and not directly in front of a window - that is probably not the problem.

probably over-watering.

Try looking it up on a site by googling "houseplants"
They need more water and/or less sunlight
I believe this is a symptom of too much water.
the ends sometimes die.. maybe because they don't get enough water and nutrients. You can just rip them off of certain plants.
In my personal experience it is usually because of to little nutrients. I have a bad habit of not fertilizing my houseplants. When I do fertilize the plants will usually produce new leaves and no brown ends on the remaining ones. If you haven't had the plants for long and you think it may be a watering problem I would suggest going to a garden store and see if they have this instrument thingy (don't know what it is called) that I have that you stick into the soil and it will tell you how moist it is down by the roots (kinda like a meat thermometer). It is a wonderful help.
