Is it possible to verify the authenticity of stainless steel?

I have stainless appliances in my kitchen, and I was surprised to learn they are not magnetic, maybe You could use that as a test.

Some, but not all Stainless Steels are non magnetic.Most tools and knives are marked as to the material.

If it's magnetic, get a sample wet and see if it rusts.
If it's not, it's probably S.S.
