Which is cheaper? Pier/Beam or slab foundation?

Question:My husband and I are going to build a home that has to be appx. 4 feet off of the ground. Is it cheaper to haul in dirt and pour a slab foundation? Or is it cheaper to build one off the ground on beams?

Answers:
I've done both but the cost primarily depends on what the contractors and their subcontractors in your area are accustomed to doing. In NE Texas, the cost will be higher for either for the raised finished floor elevation, but I'd go with the pier & beam design with wooden I-beams (BCIs). But areas vary greatly in cost.

I suppose that would depend on what part of the world you live in .
