Question:My husband & I will be going away to Europe and was wondering
WHAT is the going rate now for housesitting?
WHERE are there some ads for qualified folks w/references?
And what responsibilities do they normally take on beside watering the plants, watching over/checking on our residence?

I advise having a friend or family member do it.

usually we just have an old neighbor do it.
they take care of our pets and get the mail and bring in the paper.
I 'house-sat' for a friend of my mother's while they were in Germany for a week. I just watched TV, read magazines and made sure to keep some lights on in different rooms each night to give a lived in appearance when I left for the evening. I also kept their dog company, made sure she had food, and took her on walks when nothing was on TV. Mail went to their PO Box and the answering machine took care of phone calls.
My payment was being able to "live" in their house for a week as a change of pace, as well as a few souvenirs from Germany.
Any Trusted neighbor, relative, or friend would be good for the job. Payment is up to you. I've never heard of a professional housesitter. I don't think you'll find many ads or folks with references. Good luck!
