Where can I get free building cost estimations?

Question:My husband and I are considering having a house built, but have no idea where to get started or average cost. I keep seeing cost calculators but they are expensive! Because it is still only a whimsical consideration, I'm not willing to put any money down yet, but I want to know for sure if it is doable.
Also, any advice from people who've been there would be appreciated!

When we were thinking about it I went to the home builders show homes and asked. I looked at the plans, picked what I liked and asked for a price. That way you know for sure. They will tell you the cost per foot and give you a lot of information. It only costs your time if you do it by phone otherwise gas too.
