What is the best way to kill garden slugs without killing birds that may eat the slugs?

There's a new eco-friendly method now, nematode worms. You put the eggs (available on-line I think) in a watering can and water near your vulnerable plants. The eggs develop into tiny worms which will kill the slugs from the inside.Harmless to birds, deadly to slugs..and no dangerous meliathon(pellets) lying around.
Pocketdragon80....Birds do not have to eat the pellets to die.Eating slugs which have the poison in them is just as deadly.

hmm, i've neva heard of birds eatin slugs, so i think your okay
cover them in salt :)
slugs hate salt
salt
Set out saucers of beer.
Slugs are attracted to it, they will fall in and drown.
I doubt the bird will get drunk and die. :-)
If you want to keep the slugs and snails out do the following -

Keep all your old egg shells
Bake them in the oven until they have dried out
Break them up into bits
Put the bits round your plants

As they bits are sharp the slugs and snails hate going over them so they will leave you alone and the birds will be fine and you are being organic!
salt the slugs. it will kill them without killing anything else.
stand on them
Hedge-hogs, frogs, birds, badgers foxes all eat slugs so I commend you for asking this. I have put crushed egg shell down around plants and it has worked wonders but don't ask me how. You can also use sharp gravel as they don't like going over it. If you actually want to kill then put cooking salt on them but it's a bit mean.
Use salt or eggshells to keep them off plants, anything poison wose doesnt do the birds any good!
get a 2 pint plastic milk bottle, cut a circle in the side oposite the handle, fill with cheep lager and put in ground so the hole is level with the surface, instant slug beer trap!! viola!
try a saucer of beer
Take a shallow jar top fill it with beer put it at the side or corner in your garden. Slugs love beer, they will climb in and drown. This always works for me. You'll have to make several of them. You can use shallow dishes, old ones if you have some.
You can get a white powder from do-it-yourself stores that is supposed to dry up the slugs' slime and kills them that way. Problem is it washes away everytime it rains.
Salt works of course - but will kill your garden plants too - which sort of defeats the purpose.
The only thing I've found that really works is sticking to plants that they don't like! Geraniums work for some reason.
beer traps?salt?egg shels?copper wire/tape?evening watch-go to the garden in the evening and pick them up, yuck, byt works with mine..
best way fill a dish up with beer i dont know whether they just get drunk or drown in it though-but its not gunna harm the birds-i see many a drunk bird out on a sat night down town and i dont think it does them any harm lol
Boiling water
we used slugs pellets that have a pet repellent in ti to stop our cat from goin near the pellets it got rid of the slugs didnt kill ne birds in the process.
the best way to kill slugs, that will make them harmless to birds etc....get a bottle of strong beer or preferably stout and fill a shallow bowl(so the slugs can slither into it).leave oputside overnight, bingo kills them.and what a way to go...yay.Also salt kills them.
Salt is one way but not very kind to the slugs. Beer in a deep cup buried in the soil to the rim and the slugs can at least drown happy!
you might not believe this but the best way to kill slugs is leave out some saucer's of beer, the drink it and die (happy)
Put half grapefruit skins cut side down near the plants you want to protect. Every morning look in these and deal with any slugs caught. As lots of other people have suggested salt is effective if you are too squeamish to squash them.
